Where has Coronavirus come from?
There have been lots of theories regarding the origins of the Coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Studies are still in progress and the only sure fact at present is that it is not a laboratory manufactured organism.
Many scientists believed that Coronavirus started in the Wuhan “wet” market i.e. a seafood market which also sell snakes and many other species. In fact, research now suggests that it originated in wild animals namely Chinese Horseshoe bats and pangolins. Unfortunately for the poor pangolin, it is widely trafficked for food and medicines in China. Perhaps, Coronavirus should be called the Pangolins revenge!
The genetic sequence of the Pangolin Coronavirus is 85% to 92% identical to the virus that has caused this global outbreak. Mutation then allowed it to become infectious in humans. It is not the first organism to cross the divide. Ebola is thought to have originated in bats and MERS in camels.
Educating humans to steer clear of illegal use of wildlife for foods and medicines may be the long term solution. Short term, hand sanitisers such as MediCleanse and limiting social integration are the only weapons we have at present.
